Epoxit Floor

Especially when it comes to new floor coverings for individual requirements, you hear the word “epoxy resin floor” again and again. Some people will think of epoxy resin as a solid, two-component adhesive and, on closer inspection, can actually see parallels between epoxy resin floors and adhesives.

What is an epoxy resin floor?

A very hard-wearing floor is particularly important in areas of the house that are walked on particularly often. In the living area, tiles or hard-wearing laminate are usually used in such places, but these materials often do not meet the requirements in the commercial sector.
An epoxy resin floor meets all the requirements that are made in such areas. Because an epoxy resin floor is

  • completely flat,
  • highly wear-resistant,
  • very durable and
  • easy to clean.

An epoxy resin floor is a type of cast concrete floor that is poured completely seamlessly. It consists of liquid epoxy resins and a hardener. Both substances are mixed together immediately before casting or painting so that robust polymers are created on the floor after hardening. Although a ready-poured epoxy resin floor is only a few millimetres thick, it is one of the most resilient available types of flooring.

  • The epoxy resin floor coating is applied to an existing floor covering with a paint roller to give it additional stability. Depending on the type of epoxy resin coating, the old floor covering can still be seen after application. You can also hide the old surface under a coloured layer of epoxy resin.
  • The epoxy resin screed is a floor coating that is often applied mixed with corundum sand or quartz sand. This coating is extremely robust and also withstands many aggressive chemicals.
  • The stone carpet makes you think of exposed aggregate concrete at first glance but has little to do with it. Instead, small pebbles or similar materials are stirred into a mass of epoxy resin. The result is an attractive, even floor covering that is rough and non-slip due to the grainy structure. In the private living area, the stone carpet is the most chosen epoxy resin floor, which, in addition to the properties described, also has visual reasons.

How dangerous is epoxy resin?

A fully cured epoxy resin floor is completely non-toxic and therefore absolutely harmless to health.

Which substrate is suitable for an epoxy resin coating?

One of the special properties of epoxy resin is that it can be applied to almost any surface. The following reasons are particularly worth mentioning here:

  • Stone
  • Concrete
  • Tiles
  • OSB panels
  • Styrofoam
  • Wood
  • Metals
  • Roof tiles
  • Terrace and paving slabs

The possibility of creating a waterproof, robust surface with an epoxy resin coating is now being used in many areas. For example, effective corrosion protection is achieved when applied to metals. Wooden surfaces can also be coated with epoxy resin. This is particularly interesting for wood that has already suffered from moisture and other influences.
With an epoxy resin coating, a rotting process can be stopped, and the original appearance can be preserved. These options are of great importance, especially in boat building, but also in the renovation of half-timbered structures. If a fibreglass fabric is embedded in the still wet epoxy resin, a flexible, permanently elastic coating is created that can withstand even greater temperature fluctuations and compensates for surface movements.

How resilient is epoxy resin on the floor?

Despite its low thickness of just a few millimetres, epoxy resin is one of the most available resilient floor coverings.
Once the epoxy resin floor has fully cured, it is:

  • robust and shockproof,
  • abrasion resistant,
  • chemically resistant,
  • dust- and stick-free,
  • absolutely liquid-tight,
  • not decontaminable,
  • and wear-free.

Is an epoxy resin floor suitable for the bathroom and shower area?

Epoxy resin is ideal for covering the bathroom floor. Because it has all the advantages of the usual tiles but goes even further.
Epoxy floors in the bathroom:

  • are fully waterproof,
  • are robust and shockproof,
  • are seamless to process and therefore easy to clean,
  • can get a rough, non-slip surface through admixtures and
  • create warmer feelings than tiles.

Epoxy resin floors can also be visually integrated into the bathroom environment. This means that they are not only technically superior to a tile covering and they also look really good. For these reasons, epoxy resin floors are also popular in public indoor pools.

Experience with epoxy resin floors?

Even if epoxy resin has been known and used as an adhesive for a long time, epoxy resin floors do not have a very long history. Since epoxy resins were first developed in Germany and Switzerland in the 1930s, they have proven themselves as materials in many ways.

It has also turned out that epoxy resin compounds are extremely robust and durable, even if they are only applied very thinly. This property is also evident in epoxy resin floors. These have proven to be extremely hard-wearing, especially in the industrial sector, after all, they are driven over by heavy forklifts and sometimes even by trucks.

Epoxy resin floors are therefore also recommended for the domestic area. Here they can be used from the garage to the basement to the bathroom or even the entire living area. Highly recommended, of course, in high-traffic areas such as stairwells.

The optical variations are more diverse than ever and there are almost no limits to the design options.
